Welcome to my latest WWE DVD review, this time it is of the latest PPV DVD release from WWE, SummerSlam 2014. The main event of this event which took place on August 17th 2014 was the matches between Brock Lesnar and John Cena for the WWE title and the grudge match between Brie Bella and Stephanie McMahon and an undercard that included Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins and AJ Lee vs Paige. This event was described as the hottest event of the summer and we look at the positives and negatives of this release in this article as a swerve from my normal WWE reviews where every single move is covered. I used to do it for British Wrestling DVD’s due to the fact they are not available mostly online and so I needed to put every move but with the WWE Network/ Sky Box Office and other means that either I don’t endorse, events such as this have been watched already by most of my readers or it is readily available when needed
This event’s positives outweighed the negatives with matches such as AJ Lee vs Paige and Seth Rollins vs Dean Ambrose who are always dependable and seem to perform well on events such as this. Other matches that really impressed me on this DVD were of course ‘The Eater of Worlds’ Bray Wyatt vs ‘The Ayatollah of Rock N’ Rolla’ Chris Jericho and Roman Reigns vs ‘The Apex Predator’ Randy Orton which from 2 out of the 4 matches explored the ongoing storyline of the break up of the Shield and the fallout from that. Ambrose lived up to his billing as ‘The Lunatic Fringe’ causing pure chaos against Seth Rollins and the lead up to this on WWE TV was some of my favorite moments of the year currently such as the popcorn in the briefcase on RAW and Reigns’ win was significant at the time in my eyes and would have really given him momentum for the future to get more wins like this if he didn’t get injured after this event. Also really impressing me was Swagger and Rusev, I really think Swagger is underrated in general and deserves more credit he deserves. Reading other reviews of this, not many people like the Rusev vs Swagger match but opinions do differ in every single review and it continues in this interview. A positive if you get the Blu-Ray is the fact you get exclusives including some of the segments that lined up the matches which is really good for somebody to watch who might only be getting back into WWE after a break and another extra that is included on the DVD is the match between RVD and Cesaro from the kick-off and it is always good to see these kick off matches to see if there are any hidden gems. Finally I thought Steph vs Brie which was one of the main matches on the card and had the most build up was a positive but did have it’s negatives which are explained below but Steph did well mostly in part to the fact she hasn’t wrestled for over a decade so credit to her where it’s due for stepping back into a WWE ring probably for the final time!
First of all, Hulk Hogan coming out and plugging the WWE Network and him saying whether in the world considering we don’t even have the WWE Network yet, Hogan was wasted by WWE in this segment apart from that and could have been used in another way in ‘The Biggest Event Of The Summer’. Second of all, The Miz and Dolph Ziggler wasn’t main PPV standard and should of been on the preshow in my opinion instead of RVD and Cesaro which should of been on the main show instead as a better quality match up! I agreed that Steph vs Brie should of been on the card as part of the storyline and was a good match by both mostly by Steph due to the fact she hasn’t been in a WWE ring for over a decade but it is not the answer to the gap of Daniel Bryan who is currently out with injury and if this continues to go on until Bryan returns from injury it is going to go stale very quickly! I haven’t watched Hell in a Cell yet but this continues to play out with the stipulation that the loser will become the servant of the winner for 30 days which Nikki ended up winning and if Brie doesn’t comply she will be fired. I am looking forward to seeing what happens with this but as long as it will not become like I said really stale and boring. One of the final negatives was the fact that Lesnar won the match and is a part time champion which I do not agree with due to the fact I would rather give the title to a full timer such as Cena who appears on RAW every week and really is the face of the company and the final one was the fact that in my eyes Paige and AJ don’t get enough ring time and so matches like this may be easy quick watches but I wish that they could go on for longer as I am a fan of Women’s wrestling especially with Paige and AJ.
Rating – 4/5 – A really good event that was an easy watch for me and the card lived up to the hype! Some of the matches on the undercard did outweigh the main event but that was predicted due to the high standard of Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose at the moment and it showcased the future of WWE in them with the current big stars of Cena vs Lesnar who will continue to fight it out in my opinion until next year with one of them finally winning which will mark the return of Daniel Bryan and more feuds to come! I really look forward to reviewing Night of Champions this time next week to see if it has improved even more and get the 5/5 rating or will it fall behind. There is only one way to find out and that is to watch this space for that review!
